La tragédie de Bhopal survenue en 1984 reste la plus grande
catastrophe de l'industrie chimique connue à ce jour: Plus de
20 000 morts et 500 000 victimes. Aujourd'hui, 170 000 person-
nes manquent de soins médicaux adaptés et ont besoin d'un
soutien économique. Une coalition de trois ONG se bat depuis
23 ans réclamant justice et réparation.
L' usine américaine de pesticide Union Carbide et ses environs
n'ont subi aucune décontamination. Les produits des plus toxi-
ques ont infiltré les sols et les nappes phréatiques, polluant l'eau
que consomment 5 000 familles vivants aux alentours, soumises
aux aléas de l'approvisionnement en eau potable.
Les effets de la catastrophe ouvrent alors un nouveau chapitre :
L' eau produit des effets irréversibles sur la nouvelle génération.
Il est donc temps de réactualiser l'image fossilisée de Bhopal afin
qu'elle trouve sa place dans nos consciences contemporaines.

The Bhopal tragedy of 1984 remains the largest industrial disaster
the world has known : more than 20 000 dead and 500 000 exposed.
Today, 170 000 people lack essential medical care and are in need
of basic economic support. For the last 23 years, a coalition of three
NGOs has been fighting justice and reparations.
The American owned Union Carbide factory and the surrounding area
has still not been decontaminated. Toxic chemicals have leached into
the soil and groundwater, polluting the water supply of the 5 000
families living in the area and leaving them without a source of safe
drinking water.
The effects of the disaster are now opening unto a new chapter:
the water is causing irreversible health effects in the new generation.
It is time that the fossilized images of Bhopal are brought up to date
and given a place in our contemporary conscience.
